Legalized Graffiti
Belgium is known for its recognizable street art of characters found in famous comics. Most of the paintings in the city of Brussels were painted by artist, Georges (Hergé) Remi. Remi is responsible for the creation of The Adventures of Tintin, a well-known cartoon that first came out in 1929 and was sold as a comic album worldwide. Tintin can be found adventuring all over the walls of Brussels, Belgium alongside the other colorful artwork that makes this city so beautiful and unique. Remi's signature accompanies each of his appealing paintings.
Another interesting feature of the culture-rich cities of Belgium is that they have legalized graffiti in specified areas. Like the wall in the picture, there are walls all over Brussels (the city we explored) that welcome graffiti artists to this oasis for murals and tagging.
Keeping the graffiti contained to certain areas keeps the rest of the historic city clean and free of the otherwise illegal practice. In addition to this positive outcome, the legalization also adds colorful walls full of contemporary art that livens up and compliments the cities older buildings and churches. The legalization of graffiti in Belgium links the older history and art to current day styles and trends.
On another note, my sister, and the model in this photograph, just had knee surgery today. Please keep her and the hope for a fast recovery in your prayers!
